Diabetes is one of leading chronic diseases and a growing issue in all generations. The pandemic extent of diabetes is recorded at a global level, including Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the estimates of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), close to 366 million people suffered from diabetes in 2011. This number could increase to 552 million until 2030 if this trend continues. According to the same source, more than 166,000 persons suffer from diabetes in the FBiH. Diabetes mellitus prevalence is growing in the whole world, even though Type 2 diabetes (close to 90% of cases) is a condition that may be prevented. Furthermore, it is estimated that close to one half of persons who already suffer from diabetes (mostly Type 2) is not aware of their condition. Also, appropriate control of disease is not reached among one half of patients who have already been diagnosed.
